How to prove a Ford's build date

The single best evidence there is, and it is free. Look for it before you pay anyone anything.

States when the car was built. This is the date every import rule is measured from.

NHTSA puts this first: the 25-year period runs from the date of manufacture, and the agency looks for that date on a label permanently affixed to the vehicle by its original manufacturer. Everything else on this site exists because that label is missing. Photograph the driver's door aperture, the passenger door aperture, the engine bay bulkhead and the centre pillars before you conclude there isn't one.

No official route exists. Anyone who tells you Ford will certify your Escort Cosworth's build date is guessing.

What to do instead, in order. One: decode the VIN - the European Ford VIN carries a plant letter and a two-letter build month and year code, and this is what owners actually rely on. Two: photograph the statutory plate in the door aperture, which often carries month and year. Three: contact the Ford RS Owners Club model registrar - note carefully that registrars maintain ownership registers and trace history, and do not claim to hold factory ledgers, so a registrar's letter is informed opinion, not a factory record. Karmann built the Escort RS Cosworth at Rheine and went into insolvency in 2009; we could not establish that per-VIN Karmann records survive or are reachable, so do not plan around them. Worth knowing: Ford Australia does issue a free Letter of Verification confirming manufacturing details. Ford of Europe's silence is a policy choice, not a records problem.

Proves nothing about age, and is actively misleading: a CoC issued today for a 1997 car is dated today.

US shipping guidance sometimes lists a certificate of conformity including the production date as acceptable. Read that clause carefully - the words doing the work are 'including the production date'. A bare CoC has no production date on it.

States first registration, not manufacture. First registration is normally later than the build - sometimes by more than a year. That gap is the whole problem.
